Join us this coming February 22nd, with Fiona Jone Join us this coming February 22nd, with Fiona Jone's to talk about creating a path in inclusive design!

Fiona will share reflections on pursuing education and work in public interest design. From helping municipalities prioritize thousands of accessibility upgrades, to designing all-gender washrooms in schools, Fiona will discuss what she’s learned about connecting all aspects of our work to big ideas and the value of design.

Fiona comes from an architecture and advocacy background and is Knowledge Manager of Inclusive Design at hcma. She is fascinated by the relationships between physical and social infrastructure, and how our built environments can amplify equity and community capacity.

Fiona played a pivotal role in developing hcma’s white paper titled Designing for Inclusivity: Strategies for Universal Washrooms and Change Rooms, which has been referenced by governments, educational institutions, and designers across Canada. She helped establish advisory services focused on building clients’ understanding of and action on accessibility and inclusivity. She also works with project teams to embed related design strategies throughout project phases, and is a Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification Professional and a member of the program’s Technical Subcommittee.

The Nitobe Memorial Garden located at UBC is consi The Nitobe Memorial Garden located at UBC is considered one of the most authentic traditional Japanese gardens outside of Japan. The Garden celebrates the memory of Dr. Inazō Nitobe (1862-1933). As part of the UBC Botanical garden, it was designed to create a reverence for and sense of harmony with nature.

The garden was originally constructed in 1960. Landscape Architect Shunmyo Masuno, Zen Buddhist Monk, and Patrick Mooney, initiated a program for the Garden’s renovation. Don Vaughan Ltd. was hired by UBC to manage, coordinate and supervise the construction. The work began in October 1992 and was completed in March 1993.
