FEBRUARY EVENT | PUBLIC ROOF GARDEN AT LIBRARY SQUARE PRESENTATION AND TOUR

We are very pleased to announce that Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, original landscape architect of the green roof on top of the Vancouver Public Library will be joining us to talk about the 1991 library competition and building roofing system. She will be accompanied by Marina Rommel from Connect Landscape Architecture, who worked closely with Cornelia to ensure her vision for the new public garden on L9 was finally realized just last year.

Completed in 1995 and incorporating Vancouver Public Library’s Central branch, a Federal Office Tower and retail spaces, Library Square occupies a full City block in downtown Vancouver. The design for Library Square was chosen through a competition, and the team of Moshe Safdie Architects of  Boston and renowned Landscape Architect, Cornelia Oberlander, in partnership with local firm Downs Archambault Architects (now DA Architects & Planners) was selected from amongst 3 shortlisted firms. From 1995 until 2015 Levels 8 & 9 of the Library building were leased to the Provincial Government as office space. When that lease expired the original design team was hired and the floors were gutted, allowing the Library to expand, and to create a public roof garden on top of the building. The public roof garden along with its associated indoor space on Levels 8 & 9 is designed to attract users whose dependence on traditional books is being augmented by new forms of information delivery, and who visit the Library not only to gain knowledge but also for relaxation, entertainment and to connect with their community.

Join us on February 21st at 5:00 p.m. for a project presentation and site tour of the Public Roof Garden at Library Square. During the presentation, you will learn about project funding, team engagement, sustainable design, and the construction process. After the presentation, we will visit the Library for a tour.
