Buildings are currently responsible for 39% of global energy related carbon emissions: 28% from operational emissions, from energy needed to heat, cool and power them, and the remaining 11% from materials and construction.

Each year in BC, new construction and renovations produce 7.19 MtCO2e of building embodied emissions are produced from new construction and renovations, while 8.31 MtCO2e of emissions are produced from building operational energy.

The built environment has a vital role to play in addressing the climate crisis and there is an urgent need for architects and building designers to develop skills in Zero Emissions Buildings design. The BCIT Zero Energy/Emissions Buildings Learning Centre (ZEBLC) supports all members of the construction industry including architects, contractors, trades, developers and building officials with transitioning to the BC Zero Carbon Step Code and City of Vancouver Zero Emissions Building bylaws through online courses and hands-on learning with construction mock-ups. On January 17th, join us for an online learning session with a recap of building science and emerging topics for zero emissions buildings including building airtightness, thermal bridge free design and low embodied carbon materials. On January 24th, join us for a tour of the High-Performance Building Lab, learn different ways to design an air barrier, witness a blower door test, touch some low embodied carbon insulation materials (like sheep’s wool!) and peruse the library of envelope strategies on the Zero Emissions Buildings Learning House and the high performance envelope mock-ups. These will be fun-filled evenings of learning and demonstrations from passionate instructors who inspire others to build better buildings.
