Ms. Patkau is an architect and an educator who together with John Patkau founded a celebrated Canadian architecture practice Patkau Architects. She is a Fellow of the Royal Architecture Institute of Canada, an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and the Royal Institute of British Architects, a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Art, and a Member of the Order of Canada. Patkau Architects’ excellence has been recognized with 15 Governor General’s Awards in Architecture.
Their work is present throughout Canada, with significant projects abroad; in British Columbia their recent larger projects include Beatty Biodiversity Museum (UBC), Whistler Audain Museum(Vancouver), and Polygon Gallery(North Vancouver), a new home for Presentation House Gallery (under construction).
Ms. Patkau’s presentation will kick off an evening of conversation. Jennifer Marshall of Urban Arts Architecture will lead the discussion where audience is encouraged to talk to Ms Patkau about her work and her professional path and other such relevant questions.

In memory of the late Zaha Hadid, WIA is paying tribute to the iconic architect by showing a movie of her life, works and her opinions about different aspects related to architecture, specifically women's roles in the profession.
This is a new and special event called "Salon", which is organized based on one of WIA's mission statements: To champion women in architecture by celebrating their achievements and providing inspiration for women at all career levels.

Join us on Tuesday January 19th, at 5:30 for a tour of Ronald McDonald House BC with Natalie Telewiak, associate at MGA.
MGA has completed this 73-family facility for The Ronald McDonald House of British Columbia (RMHBC) at BC Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The new House provides a home-away-from-home for out of town families with children receiving medical treatment in Vancouver. MGA worked in a highly collaborative design process with the Ronald McDonald House team to produce design solutions that are sensitive to the needs of the staff, families and volunteers. Building integrated branding and wayfinding were also a key part of MGA’s approach to this project.
This project was recently recognized with 2015 AIBC Award - Lieutenant-Governornor of BC Award in Architecture - Merit.
Tickets will be released on January 5th at 6pm.

Career Paths in Architecture @ UBC AMS Nest
There are many directions one can take with one's career following an architectural education. A dynamic group of women working in and around the field of architecture will each do a very brief presentation of the varying paths on which architecture has taken them. Presentations to be followed by panel discussion.

Learning objectives will be:
• The architectural profession has a need for many roles and strengths, in the varied aspects
of practicing architecture. These women each fill certain roles, following their individual strengths,
areas of comfort, ambitions, aspirations, and opportunities.
• What challenges women face in their architectural careers that may lead them into certain career
• What inspirations or motivations might lead someone down a particular career path.
This is also a great opportunity to see the newly opened UBC AMS Nest (new student union building).

Corneila Hahn Oberlander with Susan Herrington
Women in Architecture Vancouver in collaboration with Party for Architects will host a presentation by respected landscape architect Cornelia Hahn Oberlander. At 93 she is still extremely active, flying all over the world to receive honours and awards, and give lectures.
WIA x P4A is delighted to have Cornelia discuss her 60+ year career and will be joined by the author of her book “Making the Modern Landscape,” Susan Herrington. Copies of Cornelia’s books will be available to purchase ($45) and will be a great opportunity to get your copy signed.

Join WIA Vancouver for a tour of the UBC Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS). CIRS is a building that has received much attention as a design at the forefront of sustainable building. Martin Nielsen and Alberto Cayuelo will lead a presentation and tour of the building, highlighting the design vision, goals and strategies for the project as well as providing an overview of operations and building performance.
