APRIL EVENT | BUILDING COMMUNITY, WITHIN AND BEYOND THE ARCHITECTURAL PRACTICE

Picture

Join us on Thursday, April 19th for an evening in conversation with three Vancouver architects who have committed a substantial amount of their professional energy contributing to the community through establishing and participating in grass roots organizations that fill a social void that they have encountered. They will share their work and will further discuss opportunities and challeges as part of a moderated panel.

We are very pleased to welcome our panellists and moderator:

Marnie Tamaki:

As a founding member of Groots Canada and board member of Groots International, Marnie has been a housing and human settlements activist to help ensure that housing is recognized as a priority for women and communities; that women are recognized for their leadership & achievements, are able to speak & have a decision-making voice in all levels of government, planning & implementation (local-global) and that people most affected by policies & developments are part of the process. She brings a passion to supporting movement building among organized groups of community women to catalyze democratic urban development & advance sustainable cities.

Karen Wan-Gauthier:

Karen strives to bring a greater sense of culture, history, and ecology to communities in which she works. Over the past 15 years, her career has taken her across the globe working on projects throughout China, Sri Lanka and Canada. At her own practice, KWG Design, increasingly her efforts are found in the realm of public consultation and community engagement — working on projects in Vancouver’s Chinatown, Gastown, and Strathcona neighbourhoods. In addition to her architectural practice, Karen co-founded the Projects In Place Society (PIPS), a not-for-profit with a belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to make their community a better place.

Peeroj Thakre:

Peeroj started out working primarily on public projects, but since founding ph5 and Urban Republic, she has added temporary urban installations, commercial and residential projects to her portfolio. Peeroj is active in the architecture community, as a guest critic at UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, mentor and urban thinker. Her work has been recognized with an RAIC advocacy award.

Jennifer Cutbill -moderator:

Jennifer is a registered Architect at Local Practice Architecture and Design, and a Regional Director of the RAIC (BC-Yukon).  With a background in architecture, systems ecology, and art history she believes every project is an opportunity for creating nested scales of positive impact for people and place.  As such, her work focuses on whole systems design and change agency; spanning scales and sectors from EV charging pavilions, to large scale urban design, mixed use, higher education, community, and infrastructural projects – the largest to date, being a 1.5 million square foot mixed use adaptive reuse community regeneration project in Memphis Tennessee (prior to joining Local Practice).
Jennifer is a regular guest critic at UBC’s School of Architecture & Landscape Architecture and the British Columbia Institute of Technology, Member of the City of Vancouver’s Creative Advisory for Affordable Housing, Advisor for the Pembina Institute’s Thought Leadership Forum, co-founding Director of the Laboratory for Housing Alternatives, and co-Founder and Executive Director of Vancouver Design Week.
